Exciting News for Sailors!
At last, our number one medal winner at the Olympic Games and the one sport in New Zealand which can always boast at having at least one reigning World Champion each year, will now have a High Performance Sailing Centre to be known as the National Ocean Water Sports Centre!

This centre will also cater for the other elite Ocean Sports such as the Ocean Kayaking, Tri-athlons and Ocean swims but will also be a base for the cycling event and the International Outrigger Cup which is race in Wakas.

This will take the form of a large ”bunker” which will be created under the existing car parks adjacent to the Takapuna Beach Reserve from which we have sailed a number of World Championships in recent years. The “bunker” will provide storage for a large number of the Olympic Class yachts as well as offices and meeting rooms for YNZ staff and the coaches & trainers. The existing stone wall will become the face of the “bunker” with the office windows and the roller doors enclosing the banker.

The Takapuna Boating Club is very involved with this development which should see an increase in our sailing and paddling membership. The additional storage space available and the facility where all our elite competitors can meet and train will be an encouragement. We will continue to be the centre of Race Management for National & World events and this facility will great enhance the amenity value for such events. We have two more World Championships on the near horizon and our newly increased club facilities, the jury room and the Race Management Office are already proving to be valuable assets.

As the attached pictures illustrate the centre will protect and improve public amenity and open space while providing a “public face’’ to a national facility. From the Beach Front Reserve the existing stone wall will become the façade for the underground boat storage and office space with the roller access doors and glass windows. The ground in front will be the leveled but the existing large pohutukwa tree will remain.

Above the National Ocean Water Sports Centre the ground level will be reinstated as currently exists with the though road access, a public promenade and a new public promenade come viewing deck with seating and a small but very nautically designed pavilion for public reception and display areas.

With the finances in place thanks to the support of the North Shore City Council, the NZ Government and other major supporters we are assured that the Centre will be completed with the year and will certainly be fully operational by January 2012 when we host our next World Championships, the Junior 470 World Champs’!
This is an amazing concept which will provide the Ocean Water Sports with a fantastic facility while preserving and greatly enhancing the public amenity of the Takapuna Beach Reserve.

We will keep you posted as the project develops – watch this space!!
