2010 ANZAC REGATTA - LAST REGATTA FOR THIS SEASONA fun regatta with great weather to end another long and busy season at Takapuna.
With relatively small fleets in the 9 classes (A total of 48 boats) some of the classes were started together. The weather on Saturday was ideal with SW breezes and all the fleets except the Techno sailed 4 races back to back. On Sunday the winds were lighter and came in from the north about 1400. We still managed 3 races back to back for all but the Techno fleet some of whom wanted to head back to Tauranga.
Six of the Techno had travelled up from Tauranga for the weekend – a couple had not raced before but they were all out there making every start and today they all finished every race! Congratulations and well done!! The Techno is the junior wind surfer fleet and from there they progress to the RS:X Fleet. In the RS:X fleet were several new up and coming young sailors while Georgia and Oliver, who are off to the Youth Worlds in Turkey shortly, were getting in MORE practise – best wishes to both of you from us all!
The two-handed fleet was interesting with 420, 470, 29er, and Hobie 16 all on the same start line with Dan Slater joining in in his Finn!! All races were about 25-30 minutes long with two windward leeward loops. At the top mark, first rounding, all were very close and by the finish it was generally the Hobie & 29er, closely followed by the 470 with the Finn amongst the 420.
On Saturday the Moths took off in the reasonable foiling speed but on Sunday, with the up and down wind speeds so were they!! They don’t need much wind to get them up and foiling but the lulls are frustrating!!
And on the start boat it was fun watching as the 29ers, Hobie & Finn negotiated their way through the 420s & 470s, as the 3.7s worked their way though the mainly novice Techno fleet and then, as the Moths and RS:X powered up and all hit the start line together at full speed! We did have a long start line!!
No crashes, lots of shouting, no recalls and only 1 protest as one RS:X reversed into another!
And watching the finishes and the faces of the 420 sailors as the Moths sailing their bigger angles zoomed through them on the down wind leg.
Thanks again to the fabulous team of helpers on both days! It really made it enjoyable for all of us!!
